NOTABLE PERSONS

MADAM, convent mother.

Very little is known about Madam, though rumors persist saying that she was a widow named Mary before becoming the Superior. Of those living in the convent, she possesses the most dangerous gift of all: her body can trap an angel's spirit within it, if she so chooses, and make use of their gifts.

MISTER, the man with the keys.

An ambitious man with even more ambitious appetites, Mister runs Madam's daily affairs. He's in charge of the money, the clothes, the cars - and sometimes, the girls themselves, though none will confess to his wandering hands. Though not married, many consider him Madam's husband, in business if not at heart.

MRS. TYLER, convent nurse.

A mute nurse who was once a convent orphan herself, Mrs. Tyler tends to all the convent girls' medical needs. She is in charge of caring for their wounds, calming their nerves, and ensuring they're pliant when Mister calls for them for holy work. A kind woman who is as trapped under Madam's iron grip as any other girl under her care.

MR. TYLER, the teacher.

Mr. Tyler is almost as quiet as his wife; he only speaks when he needs to, and prefers to retire to the silence of the convent's isolation rooms than the comfort of their provided quarters on the grounds, where Mrs. Tyler resides. There is almost nothing in the world that Mr. Tyler cannot break or kill, and many of the girls gossip that he himself is an angel fallen out of grace. He teaches the girls everything they will ever need to know about the lives they'll lead under Madam's care.

ASHA, the student.

Few girls manage to get out from under Madam's thumb, but Asha has managed, with Joanna's help. Currently operating in a similar function to Joanna, Asha keeps out of Joanna's way when their paths cross. They have little love for one another, but Asha is honorable. One of the few people that Joanna trusts to do the right thing, especially when she herself cannot.

XIAOTING, the loyalist.

Born and raised under Madam's watchful eye, Xiaoting is the most loyal of all the girls - and the most powerful thus far. Capable of bringing people back from the dead indefinitely, she is Madam's most prized daughter, and possibly her most cruel.

CARTER, the sweetheart.

Carter is as sweet as she is bloody — fitting, given her ability to transform blood into weapons. It's been suspected that she can transmutate blood into other things, but Madam hasn't seen to train her in using her ability in other ways.

CHRIS CLEMMENTS, the boss.

Mild-mannered and soft-spoken heir apparent to CHARTERIS, the biotech company that hired Johnny immediately after she flew Madam's coop. Friend to many and enemy to most, Chris keeps Johnny on a short leash for both their sakes, even when personal interest and work collide.
