History (CW: SEXUAL ASSAULT);

Joanna Johnson (not her real name), age undetermined, estimated to be late twenties or early thirties. Goes by Johnny.

Joanna was a toddler when she was abandoned at Madam's doorstep. By the time she was eight or nine, she was considered "old" among the girls in Madam's care, someone who isn't appealing to potential adoptive parents. Life in the convent was typical for the most part: she spent most of her days either in prayer or performing chores, with only the other girls and Madam as familiar company.

She's thirteen when she receives her confirmation sacrament, but instead of the holy Eucharist she is force-fed angelflesh, sending her into a weeks-long coma. The convent nurse didn't think her chances of waking up were looking good, but she persisted, slowly regaining awareness, though not consciousness, over time.

When she finally came to, an angel descended and forced itself upon her, disguising its actions as a fever dream. The angel then left her with special gifts: the ability to poison or compel people through speech, and to draw out divine power from others.

The world as she understood it quickly unravelled from then on.

Under Madam's watchful eye, Joanna was taught to recruit other girls similarly blessed as her, while also performing acts of grave sin to further Madam's ambitions and promises. Though she was considered to be Madam's protege and eventual successor, Joanna found herself breaking under the pressure of her duties and begged to leave Madam's service.

Madam saw this as a personal betrayal, and tried to burn the divinity out of Joanna through torture. Though Joanna's body was willing to surrender, her spirit would not, and Joanna continued to survive despite the abuse. In a twisted act of mercy, Madam put her to trial: Madam would grant Joanna a year of freedom for every girl she brought back to the convent.

Madam gave her forty days to accomplish the task, and Joanna brought home a girl for each day.

Now hiding in plain sight as a poorly adjusted adult, 'Johnny' works for a multi-million biotech company as a 'risk management consultant' — essentially trading one master for another.

Abilities & Skills;

— Divine Calling. She can sense if a person's spirit is capable of surviving being 'blessed', 'visited', or otherwise possessed by an angel, allowing their baseline bodies to be enhanced or manipulated. She sees an aural field surrounding the person when she comes across them.

— Psychic Tagging. Related to the previous ability: once she's witnessed someone's divinity, she can pinpoint their location anywhere on Earth, though it takes longer the further away they are from her. She has not disclosed this ability to Madam, knowing she would've never been allowed to leave if Madam knew. (Johnny always senses when one of 'her' girls has died.)

— Mind Control & Manipulation. She can compel or coerce a person by supplanting their will with her own through speech. The target hears her as though she's speaking in multitudes; once she's been heard, she can then take over that person's mind and agency. She must release the person from her control, otherwise the connection only falls dormant after some time. Death permanently severs the connection. When she used her ability for Madam's purposes, Johnny "soothed" people to become subservient or docile to Madam and the convent.

After leaving Madam, Johnny uses this ability to make her job easier, making targets end their own lives when traditional methods seem impractical. Her one handicap is that she must be speaking to the person directly. (She hasn't tried to use her blessing on the deaf.)

— Some Divine Healing. Nothing instantaneous, but divine blessings mean she's a hardy one to deal with. She can be killed, but a fall from a great height or being set on fire isn't going to kill her — not quickly, at any rate.

— Combat Skills. Majority of her work under Madam had been close-contact assassinations, as she (and the other girls) were used to entrap targets in intimate settings. While also trained in using firearms, Joanna is far more adept at using knives, and more comfortable using her hands.

— Investigative & Tracking Skills. A big part of her current job involves finding people who don't want to be found. Because she doesn't necessarily have to kill people unless needed, she's pivoted some of her expertise to retrieving or rescuing persons and objects. She has some hacking skills, but only above the average, and she uses them mostly to get into and disable security systems.

— Intimidation & Torture. She's great at both. She doesn't like to advertise.

Personality & Appearance;

— Appearance. Johnny stands at 5'9" with a lean body type that she strictly maintains. She has clear grey eyes, naturally blond hair (she dyes the roots from time to time), and pale skin that may appear clear or opalesque when under holy light (any blessed light, or light emanating from a holy place). Her posture is often alert, at times severe, but when in the company of those she considers safe or friendly, she relaxes her posture and behaviour greatly.

She doesn't have any notable physical marks outside of a jagged scar along her spine; the scar is about ten inches long and a quarter inch wide. She is often wearing subtle religious iconography, such as a cross pendant, a saint's ring, a saint's medallion, or a scapular.

— Personality. Johnny doesn't enjoy making herself known unless necessary and prefers to remain behind the scenes when working out in the open. She rarely thinks poorly of others unless they're abusive towards children, in which case she judges harshly and offers no mercy.

Because of her background, Johnny has an intense aversion to physical intimacy with people she doesn't feel comfortable with, and has only recently learned how to accept handholding and brief hugs without having a stressful reaction. She is open to offering comforting touches, however, under certain circumstances.

Generally, her attitude is to be pleasant but forgettable when interacting with people. Her curiosity over how other people behave, however, can get the better of her, and she may come across as invasive with her questions.
